Blue Maxine
A downloadable game for Windows
This prototype was created for the 2023 Bullet Hell Game Jam.
Made with Unity 5.6.5.
Blue Maxine is an isometric shoot-em-up within the bullet hell sub-genre, where the player traverses their aircraft through tiny map filled with enemies bearing vast amounts of projectiles.
The so-called "Story"
It was but untold millennia ago that an ancient breed of extraterrestrials supposedly left the earth behind, striving for the outer reaches of the cosmos, while the remnants of their civiization accumulated dust amidst the tumultuous conditions that marked the earliest phases of earth's development.
Or did they?
The whims of technological development which tamper with the very fabric of time and space itself have enabled to the aliens in question to allocate but a temporal "existence" to their space faring endeavors, while simultaneously in the parallel course-of-events, the beings remained on earth to persist about their civilization amidst the an unstable planet whose atmospheric changes wrought unforeseen evolutionary patterns.
For some reason, on May of 1918, the temporal paradox collapsed, and human civilization found itself amidst the long-standing structures of a technologically-advanced race as the respective timelines merged into one.
By this time, humans have evolved, but at a exceedingly pathetic rate which fails to impress their extraterrestrial counterparts, particularly as the global compliment of homo-sapiens appear to be inflicting upon each other a global conflict which threatens to completely erode the fabric of their own society.
Clearly, the planet is not big enough for both of them.
Enter Hauptmann Maxine von Himmelbrandt , a seasoned fighter ace with 23 aerial victories to her credit and holder of the coveted "Pour le Merite". She's just undertaken the routine phases of a run-of-the-mill dawn patrol when she suddenly finds herself piloting amidst bizarre and unfamiliar cities, wielding weapons beyond her imagination.
Not exactly what she had planned for the day, but you take what you get.
Gameplay
The player maneuvers Maxine's trusty triplane around in various directions utilizing the mouse control, while the left and right buttons serve the ends of either discharging weapons(left mouse button), or injecting War-Emergency-Powers to the rotary engine(right mouse button) enabling consdiderable burst of speed.
The objective is simply to locate and eradicate all of the enemy targets on the map, which include space turrets and flying saucers, all-the-while braving an entourage of incoming projectiles.
Per the conditions of the jam, this particular game has allocated several limitations which complicate the player's ability to complete their objectives.
Notwithstanding the implementation of limited lives, fuel is also in short supply, as is ammunition. If either of these resources have been completely expended, the game ends in failure.
Additionally, the available map space is confined to an extremely limited area, as borders enclose the small area in which the player is permitted to fly.
